Title of First Movie: "Ovelle Bakes a Cake: A Sample Child/Dog Interactive" Both hearing and hearing impaired children are capable of creating and using language even before their first birthday. However, unike hearing children, who are surrounded by speech, children with hearing loss, especially the 90 percent born to hearing parents, frequently miss opportunities to learn language skills. In children, missing this opportunity can lead to social isolation. Delayed social development is in a large part tied to delayed language acquisition. It can also be directly tied to the child's inability to pick up auditory social cues resulting in behavior problems. For teachers and parents it is a challenge to figure out how to engage and motivate the child who has not yet discovered the power of language. The goal is to find something that will motivate the child to stay focused and on task long enough to learn the language skills. Enter a Dustin's Paw dog with a Canine Enhanced Learning and Therapy Specialist - the perfect solution! This movie demonstrates how child/dog interactive activities engage and support speech therapy (specifically, the learning of receptive language, the ability to understand speech, and expressive language, the ability to use language) with hearing impaired children. *Note: With a little creativity the activities shared can be modified to accommodate various ages, disabilities and a variety of learning and therapy situations.
